But not Richard Ankrom .

In the former morning of August 5 , 2001 , artist Richard Ankrom and a group of friends assembled on the fourth Street bridge over the 110 motorway in Los Angeles . They had assemble to commit a offense — one Ankrom had plot for age .
Twenty years earlier , Ankron , then living in Orange County , was drive north on the 110 freeway . As he passed through business district Los Angeles , he was going to unify onto another freeway , the I-5 North . But he missed the exit and got lost . And for some reason , this stuck with him .
class by and by , when Ankrom go to downtown Los Angeles , he was driving on the same stretch of freeway where he ’d gotten lost before . He looked up at the big green rectangular sign suspend above and realize why he missed the exit all those year ago .

The I-5 exit was n’t suggest on the light-green overhead sign . It was unclouded to Ankrom that , the California Department of Transportation ( known as Caltrans ) had made a mistake .
Ankrom , an artist and house puma , decided to make the Interstate 5 North shield himself . He also decided that he would take it upon himself to install it above the 110 thruway .
He would call it an act of “ guerilla public service . ”
Ankrom start by learn L.A. Freeways preindication and restrain up pantone swatch to perfectly match the paint color . He dangled over bridgework to measure the accurate dimensions of other signs .

Ankrom wanted his sign to be built to the accurate specification of Caltrans , which were designed to be read by automobilist go at in high spirits speeds . Then come the next stage of the task : the facility . Ankrom planned it with the precision of a depository financial institution heist . He cut his hair , bought some work clothes and a hardhat and an orangish vest . He even made a Caltrans contractor - esque decal for his plunk - up truck .
He feared he could get halt , or forged — drop the augury or one of his tools on the car ride underneath . But he matte it was too late to twist back .
On August 5 , 20o1 , Ankrom park his motortruck and go to form . He positioned his ravel over the razor wire and made his agency up to the catwalk under the sign , nearly 30 feet above the highway .
The whole installation take less than 30 minutes . As soon as the sign was up , Ankrom packed up his ladder , rushed back to his truck , and blend in back into the metropolis .
For about nine months , only a little group of people knew that the Interstate 5 shield hanging above the 110 freeway was a counterfeit . Then one of Ankrom ’s ally leaked the chronicle to a local paper . And that ’s how Caltrans found out .
Ankrom had hoped he could get his sign back from Caltrans after they took it down ; he figured he would hang it in an prowess gallery . But Caltrans did n’t take the polarity down . His guerrilla planetary house had pass away the Caltrans review .
