The cult ’s loss leader is a vernal cleaning woman named Maggie , who claims to be a time traveler from the year 2054 . As we see in the trailer , two of those raw members are actually investigative journalists out to expose her as a con creative person … but things might not be that mere .
The picture is the work of conductor Zal Batmanglij and star Brit Marling ( Another Earth , Britta ’s non - girl on Community ) , who also write the flick together . As they explained at the Wonder - Con panel , the movie grew out of their interest in cults and fringe radical , and they shot the pic for virtually no money — they said the intact roll and crew fundamentally worked for nothing — all around the Los Angeles area , often in people ’s basement . As you may see from the 12 - minute sneak peep , they deal to make suburban basements surprisingly cinematic .
