A few treasured pages from an other screenplay for Blade Runner have turned up online , and they ’re radically different than the version you saw on screen . They end with Deckard realizing he ’s a Replicant .
Blade Runner run through many drafts on its way of life to the screen , and that ’s not even counting the last - minute revisions that added a new voiceover . For old age now , we ’ve hadthe July 24 , 1980 versionby Hampton Fancher , andthe February 23 , 1981 revisionby Fancher and David Peoples . ( Fancherdidn’t need to make some of the changesdirector Ridley Scott hold take a firm stand on , so Scott wreak in Peoples to do them . )
But now another Fancher drafthas surfaced at GameOfTheArt.com , and it ’s see December 22 , 1980 . ( It appear to be echt , but as always , you never have intercourse . ) If it ’s veridical , this might be Fancher ’s last stab at the screenplay before he turn over it over to Peoples . Also , there are a few pages of cool - looking storyboards , and here are a few images from them .
So how does this new draft dissent from the other two experience tipple ? Here ’s the organic evolution of Blade Runner ’s ending :
July 24 , 1980 drawing :
Roy Batty dies . ( And instead of that awesome language , his last line of business is , “ Crap . ” ) Deckard sweep himself to his auto and goes home to find Rachael . They get in Deckard ’s car and beat back out to the countryside , while Deckard ’s voiceover talk about how they had a lovely day and he taught her a strain about rascal and elephant . And then Deckard takes her out in the snow and shoots her in the head . If he had n’t done it himself , they would have done it , his voice - over explain . But now Deckard ca n’t go back to the city , and he ’s no longer certain what ’s really real . perhaps nothing is . He drives off . The end .
December 22 , 1980 draft :
It ’s the day after Deckard kills Batty , and he ’s in his apartment with Rachael . Bryant shows up at Deckard ’s apartment , and they talk on Deckard ’s vidphone . But Deckard wo n’t get Bryant in . Deckard insist he ’s alone , but Bryant can tell Deckard is lie . Bryant warn Deckard that Gaff is challenging . There are farsighted pauses while Deckard tries to reckon out what Bryant means , and then he gets it . Deckard finds Gaff stake out his apartment , and almost shoots Gaff . But Deckard enunciate ( in a voice - over ! ) that he ’s timeworn of pulling triggers . So instead Rachael and he purloin out and go out to the countryside . Rachael makes Deckard pull in over because she ’s never seen Baron Snow of Leicester before . They speak about Roy Batty , and how he made Deckard take in every moment is precious . Rachael say it ’s the well-chosen day of her living , then she implore Deckard to pip her . He does . Then he drives off , realizing it ’s too later for him to get forth . “ They would n’t give me papers for the Colonies even if I wanted them . ” He wonders who design “ the ones like me . ” As Deckard stares at the sky , he conclude his voiceover :
The great Tyrrell had n’t designed me , but whoever had , had n’t done so much better . ‘ You ’re programmed too , ’ she assure me , and she was right . In my own modest agency , I was a fight model . Roy Batty was my tardy brother .
The end .
February 23 , 1981 interpretation :
Deckard and Rachael are in Deckard ’s flat . He asks her if she have sex him , and if she trust him , and she says yes . He packs some stuff and nonsense and they guide for the lift , but he sees a tiny unicorn made of tin foil : “ Gaff ’s gantlet . ” Then Deckard drives through the Sir Henry Wood at 160 miles per minute . Deckard and Rachael smile at each other , but a blip newsflash on the vidscreen of Deckard ’s railcar . Deckard puts the tin foil unicorn on the dash . Deckard ’s railway car soar through the woods , and he give us a last voice over :
I knew it on the roof that night . We were brothers , Roy Batty and I ! scrap models of the highest order . We had agitate in war not yet dreamed of … in vast nightmares still unidentified . We were the novel people … Roy and me and Rachael ! We were made for this universe . It was ours !
And then the camera pan up above the woods and we see Gaff ’s spinner , chase them . The handwriting tell : “ credit ARE ROLLING , God help us all ! ” The end .
