Suffice to say that Turturro isBarton Fink , a socially - witting dramatist from New York who need to write dark , cerebral meditations on the common man . Of course , he knows jack about the usual mankind since he ’s a literary writer from New York . But his romp get a lot of attention , so a Hollywood studio exec employ him to come to Los Angeles and compose for a huge amount of money . When Barton agree , the studio apartment assigns him to write a wrestling movie and that ’s how his trouble begin .
He survive in a scary honest-to-god hotel , and his only friend thread up being his off-the-wall travel - salesman neighbor Charlie , played by a flat - out awing John Goodman . Eventually his life-time begin to deteriorate into surreal , malefic moments punctuated by mystifying murder and writer ’s cube . And it ’s starting to seem like Charlie might actually be the Devil .
In this scene , near the end of the motion-picture show , Charlie has come back from a business enterprise trip-up and receive some detectives interrogating Barton about a murder they think the author committed . Copping one of Barton ’s line about “ the life story of the mind , ” Charlie do his last standstill .
