The Princess of Genovia is back!
In Thursday’s episode ofWatch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen,Anne Hathawayrevealed that there is a script for a newThePrincess Diariesfilm. It would follow the original movie from 2001, and 2004’sThePrincess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement —and it may includeJulie Andrews, now 83, who famously played Queen Clarisse Renaldi, Hathaway’s character’s grandmother.
“There is a script for the third movie,” the 36-year-old actress confirmed. “I want to do it. Julie wants to do it. Debra Martin Chase, our producer, wants to do it. We all really want it to happen. It’s just we don’t want to unless it’s perfect because we love it just as much as you guys love it.

The mother of one continued, “It’s as important to us as it is to you, and we don’t want to deliver anything until it’s ready, but we’re working on it.”
The process of bringing the third installment to life might be taking longer than expected because the director of the first two movies,Gary Marshall, died in July 2016.

The original film starred Hathaway as Mia Thermopolis, an awkward teenager in San Francisco who is told she’s the heir to the Genovian throne after her father dies. The sequel introducedChris Pineto the series as Mia’s love interest.
Marshall told PEOPLE in March 2016he was planning on making a third film with theOcean’s 8actress.

And back in July 2017, Meg Cabot — who wroteThe Princess Diariesbook series — addressed rumors ofa possible third filmin an interview withEntertainment Weekly.
The author said there was interest in pursuing it “kind of as a tribute” to Marshall. “Who knows? [It] could happen, as we say,” she quipped.

Cabot added toEWthat there’s only one thing she’d like to see.
“Actually, the one thing I’m really hoping for is a musical, so I hope we have a Broadway musical … obviously, somebody has to write the music and lyrics, and I’m not gonna do that because that’s not where my talents lie,” she said. “So, I’m just keeping my fingers crossed that someday we’re gonna get one of those. That would be so fun.”
