Sundberg has a singular power to balance the charming and the creepy , and that talent is present from the opening page ofStand Still , ride out dumb . There is the ominous text , “ Year 0 , Day 0 , Norway , ” leading into a scene in which folk are discussing their flooded route and the heady illness spreading through the country . But the tone is light ; folks are discussing taxis and make water fun of one another . Sundberg gradually swings the photographic camera around to different shoes and different groups of people , all of whom are endeavor to deal with the outbreak and the accompanying government closure in their own way . They are vaguely implicated about the illness , which has n’t been fully explained by aesculapian professionals , but they ’re also worried about keeping their Job , about their relationship , about everything they think they ’ll need to do in the come weeks .
Sundberg introduces the characters in Stand Still , Stay tacit in much the way she does in A Redtail ’s Dream , with a bit of cheeky text that gives us a niggling insight into the character ’s personality . But the entailment is readable : These people may not outlive to the next chapter . We may never hear about them again . While for a few pages , they may be the most of import mass in the comic , their significance is fleeting .
But Stand Still , Stay Silent is n’t a comedian about the destruction of the world . We are n’t just conk to watch the worldly concern come down apart ; we ’re going to see how human being have adjusted to the new condition quo decennary later . Iceland , Norway , Sweden , Denmark , and Finland have all formed decided civilisation based on their geography , nomenclature , story , and custom — and what happened to them during the initial outbreak . But the world has n’t yet been reclaimed by manhood ; there is something severe lurking in the forbidden zone , and chilling admonitions to travelers who would venture there .
What ’s specially remarkable about Stand Still , stay on Silent is that Sundberg has managed to create an engrossing comic when she has n’t yet introduced us to our main cast . She has just ended the comic ’s rather beefy prologue , one that drops some intriguing hints about this post - apocalyptic world and ask in us to plumb its arcanum .
