To progress to their school principal - scratching determination , scientists compiled planet image , taken by NASA and the U.S. Geological Survey , from 1984 to 2018 of ten of 1000 of river stretches across the state each measure over 1.25 Roman mile ( 2 km ) in length . Together , the images covered 67,000 statute mile ( 10,800 km ) of piddle . They found that over that time , about a third of that combined length has observably changed in chromaticity . We ’re not just talking shades of cerulean and teal , either . In fact , the authors found that only about 5 % of the 11,629 naut mi ( 18,715 kilometer ) of river they measured were blue in 2018 . Rivers do tend to convert color temporarily due to seasonal slip their interpersonal chemistry . But the shifts the investigator document were long - term and “ significant , ” suggest the water body in question have undergo a major alteration .

The authors do n’t know on the button what caused each change in color they observed , but they believe many were the result of human action . For instance , the study find that many rivers in the northern and westerly U.S. turn , which likely indicate that they became full of algae . Said alga is in all likelihood tied to runoff from farming fertilizer used in those regions , which can induce harmful alga blooms . By contrast , rivers in the easterly half of the U.S. as well as the tributaries of the Mississippi River most often turned yellow , which indicates the presence of a muckle of deposit and is probably sign of soil erosion piling up into the water .
There are other factor , including nearby urban pollution or dams , that can change river ’ colors . Changes in the mood canproduce color shift , too . Increases in sediment , for instance , can also be stimulate by an uptick in rain , and fond water is more susceptible to algae growth , and both are well - document symptoms of the climate crisis .
The authors strain that a modification in a river ’s color does n’t necessarily indicate a change in ecosystem wellness . But the widespread shifts are still quite distressful . After all , more alga in rivers can be harmful to fish and other marine life history , andprevious researchshows that these blooms have become far more common in late decennium . dirt erosion into waterways can also create unsafe weather condition for some underwater creatures , andposes a job on land , too , since profligate land is more vulnerable to flooding and less suitable for growing crops . The work is yet another reminder that human action — particularly legal action by powerful corporations — have changed our landscapes in bizarre and potentially grave ways .
