Afterrepeated weather condition delays , NASA ran out of time to test itsnew flying dish . All six planned launch windows in the past two week were cancelled due to unfavorable wind conditions . The saucer is grounded while scientists attempt to schedule a new testing window .

The design was for a balloon to come up the saucer to a certain altitude , then for projectile within the dish to boost it even higher . Once peak altitude was obtained , the real run would start as the saucer plummeted back to Earth . Both the across-the-board dish dish aerial and a fancy new parachute were to slow the craft down before it impact the sea . But for any of this to work , the test required mid - level steer at elevation of 15,000 to 60,000 understructure to carry the dish antenna away from civilization . If the wind were too inviolable , it ’d interfere with the test fomite ; if the winds were too frail , the balloon would fail to carry the epitome over overt sea .

Despite on a regular basis having the ideal wind conditions , Hawaii fail to turn in during the intact launching tryout period . Six disjoined examination windows getting invalidate due to unfavourable lead condition . For now , the disk remains prosaic , and its scientist are trying to come up with a raw plan . Principle investigator Ian Clark sound very chin up - up affirmative about the frustrating atmospheric condition in theNASA closet release :
“ Our team has been working on this project for several twelvemonth , and we have been so focussed . We came here to do our job and get this fomite off the ground , but unfortunately weather condition did n’t provide us to do this . We are very affirmative and are hope to examine the fomite at the end of the calendar month . ”
Until then , any report of flying saucers over Hawaii can not be attributed to test flying for prototype Mars landing vehicle .
