Astronomical , the latest labor by artist Mishka Henner , is an entire scale of measurement model of the Sun and the nine traditional planets … and dead nothing else . As you may see in the television below , it ’s one elephantine reminder of cosmic emptiness .

Each of the 6,000 Thomas Nelson Page represents a million kilometers . While a black and white image of the Sun takes up the first two varlet , almost every other page is totally black to illustrate just how vast the distance is between each of the planet . Earth does n’t show up until page 155 of the first book , and even then it ’s at best a speedy cameo that hardly even exist up to the title of the Pale Blue Dot .

At least Earth can actually be examine — some of the major planet , like Mercury , are so tiny that it ’s gruelling to even discern them when they do show up on the page . The most impressive page after the Sun is Jupiter ’s appearance on pageboy 283 of the 2nd volume … but then there ’s still over ten volumes deserving of vacuum left to go .

The entire book is split into twelve volumes , and Henner says he has “ take ” the intact thing , an experience he called “ pondering . ” you could get some horse sense of that by watching the video preview on the left , which outdoeseven Spinal Tapin answer the eternal doubt , “ How more sinister could this be ? ” The solution is most decidedly none more black . New Scientist spoke to Henner , who explained his motivation behind this labor :

He require the 6,000 varlet to show just how unfrequented and surrounded by nihility we are . To this end , Henner made the script as cold and unsentimental as potential , “ because the universe is cold , is n’t it ? And isolate , lost , lonely , ” he says .

And it really do work . The physicality of move around over thousands of page of continuous black bring home the scale of how far we are from the other planet orbiting the sun … Henner ’s interest in nothingness was piqued when he heard about the cosmonaut ’ experience on blank station Mir . “ What the cosmonauts taught us was that being up there and staring out into the void just make you want to go home , ” he tells me .
